Joshua 12 is a list of kings Moses and Joshua dispossessed to give the land to God’s people. It is tough to read thoroughly – actually I usually just skim it giving half an effort to pronouncing all those weird names.
But these were kings, powerful men, greatly feared. The stroke of their hand meant life or death. Their word was law. Surely they seemed like gods and probably were treated as such. Now, they are just nobodies in a list of nobodies that nobody wants to read because, frankly, nobody cares?
Yes, I know “all Scripture is given … and profitable” (2 Timothy 3:16) so these passages have value but the point is these were mighty, invincible leaders until ….. until God came on the scene. Then they were whisked away like dust. Like the antithesis of Joseph, who in one day went from prison to power, these powerful, important men went from the pinnacle to the pit in just hours.
Conclusion: Never envy an evil man enjoying the fruit of this world for it is short lived and is the only heaven he will know. Never despise the trials we face in this world for they are short lived and are the only hell we will know.

Psalm 73 (select portions by Asaph)
But as for me, I almost lost my footing. My feet were slipping for I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness. They seem to live such painless lives. They don’t have troubles like other people. In their pride they seek to crush others, enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.
Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain. So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is!
Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked. Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction. In an instant they are destroyed. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
