The Bible is filled with untrue statements.

tattered bibleThe Bible is filled with statements that just are not true. I was reading in Romans today and it said this:
(5:3) we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

I don’t know about you but tribulation – for just a teeny example, think of a flat tire on a rainy day – does not cause me to break into my happy dance.

Or how about this one also in Romans:
(8:28) And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, …

We know that? Really? If I know that then why do I freak out when things I don’t like come into my life?

I can quote Romans 8:28 from memory, but if I truly knew God was behind “all things” working them together for my good then I would never experience anxiety, anger, frustration. Life would be filled with hope, joy, peace – it would be a really abundant life. But that is not my experience all the time so clearly I don’t “know” – truly believe – what that passage claims I do.

How about just one more from Romans:
(10:11) For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

I know I sure have been disappointed – a lot – with God. How about you? Have you ever asked for something – worked really hard and screwed up your “belief” so you really believed He was going to do it and POP, nothing – He burst your bubble?

So you see, the Bible is filled with untrue statements. But, as I thought about it, the problem is not with the Bible – it’s with me. I could exult in tribulations if I truly trusted God, knew He was working all things together for my good. If my hope was in Him I would not be disappointed. Jesus said He came to give abundant life. But it only makes sense that for me to experience that life I need to live the way He told me to. It makes sense that the more I align myself with the statements the Bible makes about how I should be living, what I should be believing, then the more I will enjoy the full life, peace and joy He came to bring.

So, I guess, in reality, the problem is not that the Bible is filled with untruth but that I am. If I can get that stinking thinking out of my heart and replace it with the declarations of God’s Word I’ll bet the truth might just set me free.

  3. I was speaking recently about “Calls the things that are not as though they were”. This helps make sense of it. God speaks things that are not true as though they are because He will make them true.

  4. Great message Rick! I could have written that article since that is exactly what we have gone through lately and how I felt.6 A difficult 2014 with personal health problems. And now started 2015 seeing a disciple, who was also one of my best friends passed away due to pancreas cancer, after so much prayer of “faith” “really believing”… Well, it was a very hard experience for me and spent a few weeks asking the Lord why does He promises things that are not fulfilled??? Wow! The Lord is so patient with us! Finally He brought peace to my heart: He did do just what was best, even if I did not think it was the best for me or my friend. Yet, who can separate us from the love of God? We know in our spirits He is Faithful to his promises, He does not lie, but like you say, we don’t have or know all the facts, He does and we need to trust Him, know he loves us and he will always do what is best for us even when ,for many, it seems to be unjust. That brings us again to a point in our Christian walk of surrender, saying like that precious hymn that says: It is Well with my Soul. Well, it is good to know we are not the only ones who struggle with “heathen-like” thougths! And better to know, we finally come to realize God is right, we are the ones who need to change our spiritual glasses. Praise Him because He will never fail.Amen. Blessings!

    • Thanks. I read recently a plague that said something like this – if you say you trusted God and He failed you you are saying you only trusted Him to do what you wanted Him to do. Kind of convicting because it’s so true. Thanks for sharing.
